At Tania Gerard Digital, we believe inclusivity is essential for any company. In a recent interview with Medium’s Authority Magazine, I shared some of the strategies that I use in my work to help businesses create inclusive workplaces, especially for neurodiverse employees.
Flexibility is Key
Inclusive workplaces offer flexibility—not just in working hours, but in the work environment itself. For example, in one workplace, sensory overload from an open-plan office was alleviated by dimming lights and creating quiet zones, improving productivity and employee happiness. Flexibility in how people work helps them perform at their best.
Clear Communication
Clear, direct communication is crucial for neurodiverse employees. One of the most effective changes I’ve introduced is captioned video calls, which helped both hard-of-hearing and neurodiverse employees process information more effectively. Clear communication ensures everyone has equal access to key information.
Feedback Drives Change
Regular feedback helps businesses understand their employees' needs and make necessary adjustments. For instance, one company introduced an anonymous feedback box, leading to changes in notification settings that made their project management system more manageable and improved team morale.
The Right Tools Matter
Providing the right tools can significantly improve productivity and inclusivity. I’ve recommended tools like visual task management apps and time-tracking software, which help neurodiverse employees manage their workload more effectively and reduce stress.
By implementing these strategies, companies can create more inclusive environments where all employees feel valued and heard, ready to succeed in the workplace.
